Attack on the President of Sudan

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan , who assumed command of Sudan, on an interim basis, since the departure of Omar Al-Bashir in 2019, suffered an attack on his life on July 30, allegedly attributed to militias known as Janjaweed who were articulated around the power of Omar Al-Bashir against the population of Darfur in the 2000s.

Omar Al-Bashir was president of Sudan from 1989 to 2019. His mandate was marked by crimes of genocide against the Dinka and Nuer peoples of present-day South Sudan and against the Darfur region, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people, in several accusations approved by the Prosecutor's Office of the International Criminal Court, in several Missions of Peace of the United Nations and in the very creation of South Sudan, in 2011, given the impossibility of guaranteeing the physical integrity of the main ethnicities of South Sudan in Sudanese territory under their government. During his presidency, several ethnic conflicts between Janjaweed militias and rebel groups such as the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the Movement for Justice and Equality (MJI) engaged in guerrilla conflict and against authorities in the Darfur region . This civil war caused the internal displacement of more than 2.5 million people from Darfur, creating, in addition to the humanitarian crisis, a diplomatic crisis between Sudan, its closest neighbors and the United States due to suspicions of logistical support for asylum. politician of Osama Bin Laden who lived for more than 20 years in Sudanese territory before leaving for Afghanistan and created Al -Qaeda

It is suspected that the attempted assassination of Abdel Fattah al-Burhan occurred due to his acceptance of the United States as a mediator of the ceasefire and stabilization of Sudan with the guerrillas opposing his government.

Sudan's recent civil war arose from the country's political fragmentation following Omar Al-Bashir's departure from power in 2019. The absence of leadership that can unify Sudan's political, religious and ethnic tensions is a permanent source of destabilization from the North African region.
